Reflecting on the Summer with Malika Achingale Barbie Odera

August 23, 2019

If you're in Minnesota, you know what the arrival of the State Fair means. It's one of the summer's most anticipated events, but that's not without a bit of bittersweet as it also welcomes the last week of summer before Labor Day and the beginning of the school year. This week, we reflected on what this summer has looked like for Moe123 Scholar Malika Achingale Barbie Odera and what she is anticipating most as she heads up to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where she'll begin her freshman year and plans to study forensic science.

Q: What has been the most enjoyable part of your summer?

A: Spending time with friends and family, and getting more sleep.

Q: In what ways have you prepared this summer for your first year of college?

A: I have registered for classes, and bought bedding and storage stuff for my room.

Q: What part of your first year of college are you looking forward to most?

A: I am looking forward to being far away from home, meeting new people, attending classes and joining clubs!

Q: Have any parts of the college preparation process made you nervous? How have you worked through that?

A: I am nervous about my financial stability in college. I think I am going to do a lot of impulse spending. I am working more hours during the summer in order to increase my savings, and have also applied to some on-campus jobs. I also plan on reaching out to my school’s financial aid office whenever I need help.

Q: When do you begin school?

A: August 26.
